#ModelOfTheMonth : Supermodel Mikai
Welcome to August! What better way to end a great summer than to start this month off with a great model? This month I am presenting greatness in the form of Supermodel Mikai. Hailing from South Florida this independent powerhouse has quite a few accomplishments and inspiration to share. Read up on and see the work of this amazing model you should know below - and follow her on Instagram as well.
How Did You Get Your Start In Modeling?
I started modeling at the age of 8 when my mother enrolled me in acting & dance classes, and Barbizon modeling school to learn the basics of modeling, runway techniques (that I still currently use) and model etiquette. My love for the being in front of the camera was discovered all thanks to my beautiful mother, Gwendolyn.
What Types Of Modeling Do You Do (Runway? Editorial? Parts?)?
I love all types of Modeling, but my specialty is Runway and Print (Commercial, Editorial, Glamour). My absolutely LOVE themed photo shoots!
What Are Your Goals For Modeling (Agency signing? Starting your own agency? Other?) And Have You Reached Any Of Them?
My biggest goal is to obtain a major endorsement deal with brands such as Target, The Gap, Versace, Fenty Beauty, etc without the help of an agency! I want to show little brown girls who look like me, that you can achieve whatever you put your mind, body, and spirit towards without the help of others. But of course, signing to a reputable agency wouldn't be too shabby either. I am currently a brand ambassador for Shea Moisture, the cover model for various magazines and beauty products, which is a huge accomplishment in my career.
In high school, I ran for Homecoming Queen and stated that a major goal in life was to be on the cover of Vogue magazine. I believe in speaking truths into existence. One of these days, you will see me on the cover of Vogue magazine!
What Was Your Most Memorable Modeling Experience/Memory (Good Or Bad)?
My most memorable modeling experience has to be the modeling for Korto Momolu, Project Runway Season 5 Runner-up, Laurence Basse, Project Runway Season 15 Runner-up, Tanya Marie Designs, marketing campaigns for Bijoux Hair, the cover model for Pump Magazine, Beauty Elements, and other editorial ads.
If Or When You Leave The Modeling World What Do You Hope To Leave As Your Legacy?
The legacy that I would want to leave is for inspiring brown models, male & female, to be true and honest to yourself. Regardless of status or social media influence, to be happy with your current self, you must practice integrity, purity, know your self-worth because you are your only obstacle from reaching your full potential. Keeping those notions in mind, I hope to aspire all to each greatness in which creative outlet that may be.
Do You Have Any Aspirations Outside Of Modeling?
I am currently building a beauty brand that I am supposed to be excited (and nervous) to soon release to the world, as well as re-branding the image of Supermodel Mikai.
I See That You Have Made The Long Awaited Switch To The Handle @supermodelmikai - What Prompted The Change?
With the encouragement of my Supermodel beauties, Kaye Coxe and Lola Chel, it only made sense to finally make the handle official! It was a changed that I was somewhat hesitant to make because of the potential negative comments that individuals can make, such as saying that I am not the definition of a "Supermodel". I created the name years ago and interpreted to how I affirmed myself as a model: I am a SuperM.O.D.E.L : Master of my craft, Original, Dependable, Eclectic and Limitless! I am Supermodel Mikai.
What's Your Favorite Quote?
